That Moment

Those in the ranching community will know what I’m talking about and those outside may not, but we experienced a moment today. A moment that as the years go by fewer and fewer people are privileged to experience. That moment, the moment that happens several times a year and never gets old. It's the moment when the working of the cows has come to an end for the day. That moment, when the chaos of bawling calves and mamas is over, the dust has settled, and all are where they are supposed to be. That moment, when the weanies are penned and the rest turned out, babies and mamas have located each other, and all are eating. That moment, when even the calves and the kids are worn out. That moment, when we lean against the pickup to get a drink of water (or Dr. Pepper as the case may be), and the only sounds are the cows chomping, maybe a bird, and a slight breeze through the trees. That moment of repose when the dust has settled (and I notice there's some between my teeth) and everything is just perfectly peaceful. It’s always been one of my favorite moments. It's a shame so many people don’t get to experience agriculture first hand. It's a shame so many miss out on these kinds of moments.
