Happy New Year & Thank You, Mamas!

Writing & Photo
by Vonda Frost

This is absolutely not the typical New Year’s story you see plastered all over social media. I fed cows today, like I’ve done a thousand times before over the past 9 years. This time it was different. These mama cows gave us our start. They bear my granddad’s brand and the infamous Farr Cattle Company swirl. The majority will age out this year and that reality hit me like a freight train. I took these pictures on my iPhone and sobbed. Big freaking crocodile tears. These cows were ridiculously hard to cake break. Honestly they’ve only come to the feed wagon the past two years thanks to Kevin Floyd. They have given us countless keeping heifers, one who made the cover of the Livestock Weekly , a few bulls we’ve kept and many others we’ve sold as commercial stock for someone else’s herd. I cannot find words to express how grateful I am for these mamas They have survived off of very little at times and hardly a few have missed a calf. I can never repay them for what they have done for our family. I love cattle. I especially love the Hereford cow and her docile manner, her thriftiness in this brutal country and her gift of life to the beef industry. I cry a lot these days…but I know, so intricately, what they give to society. Happy 2024, friends. May you all be blessed.
